На заре развития фотооптики перед ее создателями стояла задача собрать объектив, дающий максимально реалистичный рисунок, ибо первые объективы-монокли данным свойством не обладали. Такой объектив вскоре появился, но возобладала идея сочетания реалистичности и художественности. Так на свет появились объективы с красивыми именами и не менее красивым рисунком: Тессары, Планары, Гелиары, Зоннары. В сотрудничестве с инженерами-оптиками работали фотохудожники.
